New buildings in the trendy leisure district

Flon-Pépinières, Lausanne

On the former «Pépinières» site in the urban Flon district, we realized three new buildings for a variety of leisure uses. The rectangular layout and the height of the roofs correspond perfectly to the depth of the valley and are typical elements of the location. The historic industrial buildings and the contemporary architecture in the heart of Lausanne form a harmonious ensemble.

History

The Flon district was originally a goods depot with a freight station, named for the river that flows beneath it, Le Flon. Even today, old sections of track recall its former use, and the river is still visible in some places.

A year after we secured the contract in 2010, the Haute École de Musique (HEMU) decided to make Flon their home and commissioned us with the tenant fit-out for two of the three new buildings. Adjacent to the EJMA Jazz School, a concert hall, classrooms, and office space were created in the second of the three buildings.

The principal stylistic feature of the main building is the imposing façade, which is illuminated at night by energy-saving LEDs. The unique façade structure is modelled on the plant world and finds a fitting conclusion in the green roof garden.

The vibrant neighborhood with all its diversity is a magnet for young and old alike.
