New building for the Department of Biomedicine: Start of construction in autumn 2023
Another milestone has been reached: The total contractor agreement between the University of Basel and Implenia Schweiz AG was recently signed and the credit guarantee issued by the two parliaments of the cantons of Basel-Stadt and Basel-Landschaft. The building permit has been in place since February 2023. This means that nothing more stands in the way of the start of construction in autumn 2023.
The building will bring together the experimental laboratory research of the medical faculty on a total of 12 floors and will be realised on the site of the former Biozentrum, also a building by Burckhardt from 1970.
«The new building impresses with its façade with electrochromic glazing, which is used for blackout control. It is the first project of this size in Switzerland with this innovative construction», explains Christoph Frey, architect and member of the management of Burckhardt.
The new DBM building will unite around 70 research groups that are currently spread across five locations. This will link basic research together with clinical needs. The new building, with a total area of over 35’000m2, will provide space for about 900 employees as well as 200 students. As part of the «Schällemätteli» life science campus, the building offers state-of-the-art infrastructure and ideal conditions to make Basel even more efficient as a science location in international competition.
Burckhardt is responsible for planning the new building, while Implenia Schweiz AG is acting as the total contractor. Completion is planned for 2028, with full commissioning in 2031.
The model of the new building project is open to the public and can be viewed in the foyer of the Kollegienhaus on Petersplatz.
Further information on the project can be found on the website Uni Basel.
