Topping-out ceremony for Max Planck Institute of Microstructure Physics’ new building in Halle (Saale)

In Halle an der Saale, Burckhardt constructed a new building to extend the Institute of Microstructure Physics for the Max Planck Society. Laboratories were built for research on next-generation computer technology. The topping-out ceremony was held on 4 October 2023.

«Just as the three parts of the new building and its three functional elements – laboratories, office space and clean room – are coherently integrated, the interior and external space also interlinks: the forecourt, foyer and central atrium will together provide space where people from different specialist fields can meet up and talk,» explained Daria Grouhi, head of Burckhardt’s Berlin office before thanking those present for their professional collaboration.

The campus of the Max Planck Institute for Microstructure Physics in Halle is part of a large-area science and research location where further development will take place. We are realizing an extension building with space for laboratories, a clean room and office workplaces, scheduled for completion by the end of 2025. After completion of the shell, work will begin on the building’s envelope and interior. We are applying a room-in-room principle for experiments in decoupled laboratories with air showers in the approx. 700m2 clean room area. Once the machinery and large equipment has been installed, the current openings will be closed up in the laboratory section which will be windowless at a later stage.

«With the topping-out ceremony, we are celebrating an important milestone in order to continue successfully making significant research contributions to fundamental and socially relevant topics in the future. We expect new concepts for processing and storing data that are based on the function of the brain and lead to more energy-efficient computers. Exciting times are thus ahead of us,» says Dr. Dirk Sander, Scientific Building Coordinator of the Institute, excitedly.

«With the execution of the building shell, the project is now taking shape and you can already guess what it will look like: The positioning on the campus and the striking building structures are creating new spaces with a high quality of stay – both indoors and outdoors – and thus a real ‘business card’ for the Institute of Microstructure Physics.» Heike Kiko, Head of Construction Management III, Research Building and Infrastructure Department, Max Planck Society, Munich
