Glass façade with green wall

Hotelplan Headquarters, Glattbrugg

The building envelope is a transparent, naturally rear-ventilated glass construction with daylight and energy optimization, and a roof that is interpreted as a fifth façade. The result is a considerable reduction in aircraft noise pollution as well as optimal climatic conditions. The primary structure of the building consists of concrete flat slabs on stanchions, reinforced by a solid core. With its clear, simple shape and uniform materials, the Hotelplan headquarters in Glattbrugg brings calm to the mixed structures that surround it.

Project specifics

Three buildings under one roof

The building concept – «Three buildings under one roof» – incorporates an open, flexible and communicative interior spatial structure in the form of a quiet, sheltered atrium. The individual buildings are linked by vertical and horizontal circulation routes through the atrium, such as elevators and bridges. These can serve a range of purposes (break rooms, meeting areas), permitting maximum flexibility of use. The result is a vibrant, light-flooded communication zone that contributes significantly to the quality of the workspace.

We have been working intensively on many current topics such as urban warming, green façades and energy efficiency for over 20 years.

A green curtain for the glass façade

Instead of conventional technical sun protection, a steel structure covered with climbing plants has been placed in front of the south façade, providing natural protection from the sun as well as creating a unique atmosphere inside the building.

A pioneering green project

After only a few years, the plants have already grown enough to achieve the desired effects. As well as lending the building an exciting, constantly changing appearance, they also generate considerable energy savings. The building was described as a pioneering project on Einstein, a program by the Swiss television network SRF. Watch the video here (Hotelplan feature from 24:38).

Other sustainable projects that impress with their «green architecture» are the MFO Park, Zurich and the Greenpark Letzi, Zurich
