Healthcare Centre Bachwiesen, Zurich
The Healthcare Centre Bachwiesen responds architecturally to the societal changes associated with an aging population, shaping spaces that support a self-determined and communal life in old age. The new building extends the existing complex and is connected to it by a central encounter boulevard. A solid concrete base, lightweight timber storeys above, and a variety of outdoor spaces define an open and welcoming environment for residents, caregivers and guests.

A mediator within a layered urban fabric
The surroundings of GZA Bachwiesen are characterised by a diversity of architectural expressions from different eras as well as ongoing urban densification. Within this field of tension, the new volume acts as a mediator: its concrete base relates to the larger existing buildings, while the timber façade structure references the small-scale constructions of the adjacent allotment gardens.

Five open space components
The spatial organisation concept is composed of five distinct elements: firstly, a newly organised entrance area forms a generous arrival zone for different modes of transport, and a planted pergola frames the existing koi pond, linking the open spaces between the buildings. Sheltered garden areas provide quiet retreat spaces for residents and their guests, complemented by a riverside park along the Albisrieder stream with paths for relaxed strolls. Continuous green balconies with generous planting boxes, as well as extensively greened roofs, complete the concept.

Clearly structured care architecture
Along the exterior walls on the ground floor, a generous, covered passage connects the existing buildings with the new extension. Seating niches integrated into the walls structure the passage, while the opposite outer edge is defined solely by climbing plants that provide shade. This semi-open boulevard functions as the central element for orientation and circulation, linking public, operational and care-related uses.

Robust structure, sustainable construction
A continuous column grid together with a central reinforced concrete core transfers loads efficiently into the foundations. The basement levels and ground floor are intended to be constructed as solid structures, while the care floors above are conceived as a timber hybrid construction.

Project plans
The spatial organisation follows a clear logic: technical services, storage areas and the underground car park are located in the basement levels. The ground floor accommodates public and operational functions; above are a day centre, therapy areas, meeting rooms and a restaurant with outdoor space. The upper floors house six care units with continuous, accessible balconies that provide light, air and views.
