Burckhardt is constructing a new regional health center in Laufen on behalf of Baselland Cantonal Hospital. The Birs Center already hosts shopping facilities, various doctors’ surgeries, treatment rooms, offices, a hairdressing salon and a bank on its ground floor. From March 2024 these will be joined by a comprehensive range of outpatient medical services on the two floors above,²spread over two floors, opening in March 2024.

After the contract was awarded in March 2023, the demolition work in the existing circular structure began in April 2023. Keeping the shopping center operational throughout presented particular challenges, as did the building’s curved walls with different radii and its low ceiling height. The interior design focuses on the special building technology for medical facilities. The new MRI device will be housed in a room with a completely closed copper shell, fitted with multiple layers of steel plate to ensure optimum shielding of the MRI magnetic field.

The timing is challenging, as the new health center is due to open to the public on 5 March 2024.

«The fact that we are still on schedule is also thanks to the constructive dialogue with Baselland Cantonal Hospital and the building manager,» site manager Corsin Seifritz explains.
